This is a question that permeates Bad Times At The El Royale without ever becoming a central focus: who is on the tape? The film is worth a look for the stylized images, nifty story and quirky characters. King, and his own stance on racial equality was borne of political ambition first, and human compassion second, but his words and needs towards the progressive cause of equality nonetheless spoke for themselves. In a very Coens-esque touch, the last image of Bad Times At The El Royale is Darlene, the film's only completely virtuous character, taking the stage for her Reno performance, being watched by the newly reborn Flynn. While Bad Times at the El Royale ultimately leaves the identity of the would-be blackmail victim unanswered, the movie leaves some clues. The Nevada side is the one with a casino, although the license for this one has expired. A mysterious group of strangers. It turns out that the hotel had long been more than just a typical place to rest for the night.
I rolled my eyes in skepticism, but the esteemed cast and remarkable scenery kept me from cutting it short, and I was rewarded in spades. However, Rose reveals that she has already called Billy about their location. But the truth is, each of us is multifaceted, and most of us are just doing the best we can to provide a sustainable standard of living for ourselves and our loved ones. But once the threads are more or less pulled together, the movie devolves into a bloody, drawn-out standoff plot in which a preening villain struts around being appalling while the camera eats up his every move. Like the Cal Neva, this one sports a clear line running through the middle of the lobby, which, by virtue of being nearly deserted, feels more like a movie set than a once-hopping recreational destination.

There are several story lines housed in the vacancies of the El Royal-- a formerly prestigious Lake Tahoe hotel whose claim to fame is that it is split by the border of California and Nevada. Darlene and Flynn tend to a bleeding out Miles, who begs for forgiveness for everything he did while at war, right on the Nevada-California state-line that runs through the middle of the building. As human beings, each of us possesses the potential for great harm and suffering in equal amounts generosity and joy. Actors and acting was good. Goddard channels a range of influences from the Coen brothers and Quentin Tarantino to gospel music to create the stylish period piece.
